It has been revealed that the plot of the hugely anticipated Lord of the Rings TV show is to focus on the attempts of Pippin and Sam to set up a video rental store in Hobbiton.
Hobbiton is one of the most evocative, idyllic locations ever created in fantasy fiction, but fans have always wondered where the hobbits would have rented videos from.
“Its the perennial question,” said producer Sean Boyd.
“Obviously, nowadays, they’d stream Netflix directly to their smartphones, but Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit are set in the past, and stable broadband in the times of Sauron would have been the stuff of a madman’s dreams. They’d have barely been able to get online at all.
“Without somewhere to rent Pretty Woman or Basic Instinct, Hobbiton just isn’t a convincing community
“So, we’re going to tell that story of how Sam and Pippin brought video-rental to Hobbiton.”
The pilot sees Sam, Pippin, and Merry, still traumatised from the events of the Lord of The Rings trilogy arguing about who has to return the copy of Pacific Heights to Beorn’s video rental store in Eriador.
Merry draws the short straw and when he is brutally slaughtered by a hill troll the hobbits incur some really quite punitive late-return fines, so Sam and Pippin decide to set up their own video store.
“Its got everything – tears, triumph, an amusing bit when Sam falls over,” continued Mr Boyd.
“Fans are going to love it.”
The Lord of the Rings TV show comes to Amazon later this year, and if successful, a second series will focus on Aragorn’s attempts to set up a Water slide park in Bree
