A new trailer for the final season of House of Cards has revealed the fate of Kevin Spacey’s character Frank Underwood.
The teaser showed Underwood’s estranged wife Claire, now President, screaming into a phone – ‘Frank, you can’t run away to join the circus, you have to be prosecuted for murder.’
“This couldn’t be a whole season of ‘what happened to Frank,’” said creator Beau Willimon.
“This is Claire’s story, so we needed to make it clear from the off that Frank has run away to join the circus. He won’t be returning.”
The first episode of the new season will tell how Frank had secretly always wanted to be a lion-tamer and with his wife now in his place as President, he seizes the opportunity and leaves under the cover of night.
“I hope people will be satisfied with the conclusion to Frank’s story,” continued Mr Willimon.
“Granted, he never explicitly expressed a life-long ambition to be a lion-tamer, but I think that there are definitely moments in the second and third season that can be interpreted as revealing an inner desire to wear a top hat and make a lion jump through a hoop.”
Mr Willimon explained that joining the circus wasn’t the first thought for the fate of Frank Underwood.
“No, we considered having him start up eighties cover band, become a monk, or even reveal him to be a figment of Claire’s imagination.
“But they all felt stupid, so we went for having him run away to join the circus instead.
“It’s the only credible solution.”
