A new Lord of the Rings video game has been released in which the player will take on the role of Gollum on a quest to retrieve the Ring.
Taking place between the events of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, the game begins with Gollum discovering a cache of automatic weapons, then proceeding to lay bloody waste to Middle Earth as he guns down everyone on his way to win back the Ring or his ‘precious.’
“I’m a big fan of Lords of the Ring,” claimed producer Stewart James.
“And, like many fans, I’ve often wondered what would happen if you gave Gollum a bunch of guns and have him set out to get his ring back.
“I think you’d have a violent, visceral and exciting adventure and one that fans are finally going to be able to play through with Lord of the Rings: Gollum.”
Some fans were excited.
“I get to machine-gun Legolas in the face? I am all over that,” tweeted @AragornsUnderwear.
However some fans have criticised the game for not being true to Tolkien’s original writings.
“It’s true that Tolkien never specifically wrote about Gollum rampaging through Middle Earth with automatic weapons,” concedes James.
“But he never specifically wrote that Gollum didn’t rampage through Middle Earth with automatic weapons, either.
“So, I think we’re fine.”
