New film from Richard Linklater about the death of the universe to be filmed over the course of eternity

Richard Linklater has announced a new film that will document the end of the universe, and will be filmed over the course of eternity.

Linklater is the acclaimed director behind Boyhood which, over the course of twelve years, documented a boy growing up, and the forthcoming Merrily We Roll Along, which will be filmed over twenty years.

The Death of Everything is set to be his most ambitious project yet.

“Documenting the death of the universe presents some very real logistical challenges,” he said.

“Not least the fact that I’m unlikely to survive long enough to be there at the end of the universe.

“At present I’m working on building an artificial robot Richard Linklater that is able to direct films, but I can’t get the hair right, so I’m not sure that’ll work out.”

His other option is to hand the project to someone else.

“Yeah, I was thinking about my daughter who is a great kid and she’s really smart, but she’s training to be a dentist and I’m not sure dentistry is really going to be a good background for documenting the end of time.

“We’ll worry about that later.”

The cast is equally ambitious.

“Well, yeah, I mean, that’s going to be everyone ever. We’re getting contracts out soon.”

Perhaps the biggest issue with the project is that the film will only be released after the end of the universe, when humankind is extinct, meaning that box-office numbers could take a hit.

“That’s true,” said Linklater, before breaking into a broad smile.

“But I’ll be a shoo-in at the Oscars.”
