New Clockwork Orange special edition to feature scenes with droogs’ lovable, wise-cracking robot pal

A new Clockwork Orange special edition bluray will feature scenes cut from the original that feature Alex and the droogs’ lovable, wise-cracking robot pal.

The robot, called Ronnie, was originally included to introduce some lightness into the famously upsetting and thought-provoking film.

“So, Stanley [Kubrick] filmed a bunch of scenes with Ronnie the robot,” explained Stewart James, who is curating the special edition cut of the movie.

“We’re going to be re-inserting them.

“We’ve got a great early scene where the gang beat up a tramp. As it exists now, in the version of the film we’re used to, it’s a shocking and violent scene.

“However, with the Ronnie the robot footage re-inserted, it becomes hilarious. You’ve got Ronnie going – ‘hey guys, you tramped all over that tramp, am I right?’ – and he’s tripping over things and falling down and getting in the droogs’ way.

“It becomes a lot lighter, more funny and appealing.”

It is thought that Kubrick included Ronnie the robot because he wanted to film to appeal to as many people as possible, but the studio wanted an uncompromising and intellectual film and demanded he remove the footage.

Clockwork Orange: The Ronnie the Robot cut will release later this year and a promotional tie-in with McDonalds will see Ronnie the robot toys given away with Happy Meals.

Just like Stanley Kubrick would have wanted.
