Netflix’s new science fiction film – Annihilation – has proved to be a success with both critics and viewers, despite having a cast made up largely of women.
“Well, we were surprised as anyone,” said Netflix executive Benedict Isaac.
“I mean – science fiction? With women? What the hell were we smoking when we came up with that plan?”
“So, yeah, when we saw the picture and saw that it was just a bunch of chicks then we knew that it wasn’t going to play in theatres, so we just dumped it on to Netflix and figured that we’d never hear about it again.
“Turns out people genuinely quite like it though, and not just weirdo feminists, but normal people too.
“Who knew?”
The film, which relies on interesting characterisation and intriguing, thought-provoking story-telling, rather than just having a famous man in it, is even being touted for a theatrical re-release.
“Yeah, I mean, there’s a bunch of films out there that have men in that will obviously take precedence,” continued Mr Isaac
“But, if there’s a slot around the World Cup then maybe we can roll it out for a limited release or something.”
There are also tentative plans for a sequel.
“Yeah, well but if we do a follow up then we’re going to take it seriously this time
“And put some damn guys in it.”
