In what seems like a response to news of the Amazon Phoebe Waller-Bridge Tomb Raider series, Netflix have announced a new series based on a classic computer game property – Jet Set Willy.
“Look, if you’re going to make a show based on a classic computer game, then surely Jet Set Willy is the only way to go. Why would you do anything else,” said Netflix executive Stewart James.
“You got this guy; Willy. He just wants to go to bed, which is what most people want most of the time. He doesn’t want to kill a bunch of animals, not like *some* people do. The problem is, he’s got to tidy up his house, and it’s a big house.”
With Phoebe Waller-Bridge writing the Tomb Raider show, Netflix are hoping to land Sally Wainwright to write Jet Set Willy.
“Yeah. We’re not sure yet, but Sally’s great. Happy Valley is great. She could really bring that humanising everyman quality to Willy, not just turn him into someone who has a bunch of embarrassing sexual encounters and smokes lots of fags.”
One thing that they won’t have to worry about is sets.
“No, we’ll just reuse the sets from The Crown. We’ll just put a terrifying huge clown face by the stairs and roll a big egg down the corridor.”
The current favourite to play Willy is chameleonic acting icon Meryl Streep but it is understood that before winning the part she must perform a Quirkafleeg.
