The Mary Poppins sequel due this year has received a last minute title change. Originally called Mary Poppins Returns, it will now be known as Mary Poppins: Blood on the Horizon.
“Yeah, we had a real problem with the title for the picture,” said director Rob Marshall.
“We needed a really strong sequel title, so initially we thought The Revenge of Mary Poppins, but that sounded a bit scary so we went for The Bloody Revenge of Mary Poppins, but that was even worse.
“Then we went for Beverly Hills Cop 2. That was great – the ‘2’ was perfect because, you know, it was the second film.”
Sadly though, that title had been used previously.
“Yeah, that was a blow. So, then we thought Beverly Hills Cop 3, but that lost the ‘2’ that we liked, and there was still the whole used-previously thing.”
The process continued with countless titles suggested
“Mary Poppins: Die Harder, Mary Poppins: Back 2 tha Hood, Mary Poppins 2:Electric Boogaloo. But they’d all been used. Turns out there’s been a lot of sequels made.”
A complete change of mindset was required.
“Yeah, we stepped back and looked at the film – a wholesome family musical that’ll be fun for all ages.
“That’s when it hit me – Mary Poppins: Blood on the Horizon.
“Perfect.”
Mary Poppins: Blood on the Horizon will be released later, and if successful will be followed by Mary Poppins: Hot Moms Home Alone.
