Low-budget zombie movie saves money by filming in actual zombie apocalypse

Canny producers have managed to create a realistic, convincing zombie movie with an eye-catching low budget by using one simple trick – they shot the film in the midst of a real-life zombie apocalypse.

“The key was patience,” laughed producer Stewart Messi.

“Someone’s always going to let a virus escape from a laboratory, or there’ll be a weird meteor that enters the Earth’s atmosphere, and then there’ll be a big zombie apocalypse. We had the script a few years ago, all we had to do was bide our time.”

Zombie Death Malarkey was filmed in London during the most recent zombie outbreak.

“As soon as the first reports of the dead rising from their graves and attacking the living, we grabbed the camera’s and headed into town.

“We stopped off at the Clacket Lane Services to get some really impressive shots of normal people going crazy and looting Waitrose. That alone would have cost us hundreds of thousands to recreate a Waitrose, and then get stock and extras and everything. We got it for free.

“We arrived in London and the streets were all empty. Again, eerily deserted London streets? That costs a bomb to sort out. But, you know, a population in panic from the living dead tends to stay home, so we got the whole thing for free.”

When it came to getting footage of actual zombies, the production had to be careful.

“We learnt our lesson early on. We lost our microphone guy when these zombies rushed us while we were doing the scene when the hero was doing his big speech about how humanity will endure. We didn’t realise they were running zombies not shambling zombies. We took care after that. Kept a car running, wore decent trainers, all that.

“Wasn’t easy, but we did it. We made our film. Now, when humanity starts to rebuild, they’ll have a really effective zombie movie to look forward to.”

Mr James is already planning his next low-budget film set during Armageddon, when Satan rises and walks the earth.

“Yup. We’re ready to go and have booked open tickets to LA. That sort of thing always happens in LA.”
