A prequel to the Disney Classic The Lion King has been announced. The Lion Prince will show a young Mufasa when he was an 80s funk megastar.
“I thought the history of Mufasa would be an interesting story to explore,” explained producer Stewart James.
“Of course, if he’s the Lion King, then before that he must have been the Lion Prince. And what is a Prince? An 80s funk megastar. And who wouldn’t want to see an 80s funk megastar paying his dues in the jungle funk clubs? No-one, that’s who.”
The film will focus on the period at the start of Mufasa’s career. His first two records have gained some critical acclaim from the parrots and cockatoos, but he hasn’t really broken through to the rest of the jungle yet.
“Yeah, he’s still living at home. His parents want him to stop messing round with music and start preparing to be a Lion King, but he believes that he’s got it in him to make a funk record that changes the jungle forever, that cuts through to everyone – zebras, hippos, giraffes – not just hipster exotic birds who really know their funk.”
The film will show the young Mufasa playing some blistering live funk shows at the Water Hole, a popular jungle funk club.
“We’re really committed to making these shows something really special. If it goes the way we plan, I’m confident these will be the greatest lion and jungle animal funk shows ever committed to film. It’s going to be really special.”
The Lion Prince is currently in pre-production and will be released next year alongside the best Disney soundtrack since the Aristocats.
