The internet is alive with curiosity about the character Will Ferrell will play in the upcoming Barbie movie with the official cast list detailing his character as ‘Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.’
From advance publicity, clips, and trailers, the film had appeared to be a sunny, witty film about the legendary toy, but the newly discovered credit could mean there’s a little more to the movie than first thought.
“Well, if you’ve got the character of Gordon Brown in there, then my assumption would be that, alongside the hilarious scrapes and wacky fun of a doll trying to make her way in the world, there’s going to be a subplot centred around post-millennial UK politics and the end of the New Labour project,” explained Barbie fan Kelly Grace.
“Which, frankly, is very exciting news. I think it’s what most people were hoping for.”
Speculation is that this will be a long film with two major plot-strands, one with Barbie being expelled from Barbieland and setting off for the human world to find true happiness, and another dealing with the final years of the Tony Blair Government and Gordon Brown taking over, dealing with the 2008 financial crisis and deciding whether or not to hold an early election.
“I would imagine that those two strands would come together at the end,” said Kelly.
“It could be that Barbie and Ken maybe have to take charge at a meeting of world leaders and get them all to have a big singalong and make them realise that if they’re nice and kind to each other then they can save the world from financial ruin.
“Just like happened in real life.”
The film is currently known as The Barbie Movie, but it’s expected this will change and Barbie, Gordon Brown and the Collapse of New Labour will be released on July 23rd.
