A surprise sequel to cult 2001 hit Donnie Darko has been announced that will see Donnie have to travel into the future to deal with his kids.
“Okay, so Donnie has killed with the time travelling rabbit guy and saved his girlfriend from getting run over, right? Something like that, anyway. Who even remembers,” explained director Stewart James.
“So, we pick up from the end of that film. You know the jet engine’s just falling through the roof. Everyone thinks Donnie’s dead.
“Okay, so we open on that scene then go in the house and see the jet engine hovering above Donnie and it goes – ‘it’s your kids Donnie, something’s got to be done about your kids’ – and then, bang! It takes him off to the future.”
The film promises some smart jokes about life in the future.
“Yeah, right. We’ll have a cinema showing, like, The Banshees of Inisherin 12 or something. Then there’ll be a café where the whole thing is done up to look like a Tesla. People will jet around on flying skateboards although, you know, that’s probably optimistic.”
The film will show how Donnie’s son has agreed to dress up as a time-travelling rabbit and so Donnie takes his son’s place and doesn’t dress up as a time-travelling rabbit, saving Donnie’s son from becoming the time-travelling rabbit guy. However, that has unexpected consequences in the past.
“Yeah, turns out the space-time continuum needs a time-travelling rabbit guy or reality crumbles and falls apart. So now Donnie has to back to his own past before he saved his girlfriend and convince the time-travelling rabbit guy to come with him to the future. Something like that anyway. Does it even matter? We’ll play some great eighties tunes and everyone will have a great time.”
Should the sequel prove as successful as everyone hopes, then a third film is planned in which Donnie has to travel back to 1984 to kill John Connor.
