There was widespread bemusement and incredulity at the announcement that the theme tune to the new James Bond film would be performed by Billie Elish meaning that, once again, Napalm Death had been overlooked.
Formed in 1981, the hugely popular Napalm Death have been one of the most popular thrash and grindcore bands on the planet, and yet are continually ignored by producers when it comes to the James Bond theme.
“To be honest, I’m used to it now,” explained Napalm Death founder – Jeremy Napalm Death.
“You see a new Bond film is coming, you just think – No, they probably won’t even consider Napalm Death to do the theme – and sure enough, they don’t.
“You know, it is a bit disheartening, but what are you going to do?”
In 1997, the band actually wrote a song for Tomorrow Never Dies
“It was probably a bit naïve,” said Mr Napalm Death.
“But we thought that if we just made the song and sent it to producers then maybe they’d finally pick us.”
He described the song.
“Just nine seconds of me screaming ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ over some really quite loud guitars. It was really good, really exciting. People loved it. Everyone thought we’d nailed a James Bond theme.
“They decided to go with Sheryl Crow. They sent us a nice letter though.”
Although Mr Napalm Death has put a brave face on things, the Bond theme snub must be even more disheartening than usual with the news that Extreme Noise Terror have been picked to perform the closing song and Lawnmower Deth are providing the incidental music.
