It is understood that the movie industry is considering letting another woman direct a film.
Although discussions are still at an early stage, indications are that all the men in charge are open to one of the several hundred films made this year being directed by a woman.
Obviously, the woman would, as is traditional, be required to surround herself with a largely male crew to makes sure she doesn’t get herself in a tizzy and accidentally spend the entire budget on soft furnishings and Adele cds.
“It’s something that’s being considered,” said a Hollywood insider.
“If it’s a film that concerns itself with womanly topics such as ponies or menstruation then perhaps we will think about letting a well-supervised girl try her hand at directing it.
Previous experiments with letting women direct films have resulted in the likes of The Hurt Locker, Lady Bird, and Wonder Woman.
Although very well regarded films, it is impossible to know if they would have been even more well regarded if a man had directed them, as would be normal.
“Whilst certainly those are tremendous pictures, and those ladies did really pretty well,” continued the insider.
“Its important not to forget that some credit has to go to the men who made the bold decision to let those films be directed by a woman.”
It is expected that if a woman were to be allowed to direct a film this year, and it isn’t a disaster, then perhaps in another year or two Hollywood will consider letting another woman direct something.
