New details of Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw have emerged and it’s fair to say that the decision to portray the pair as homosexual lovers has proved a surprise.
“Frankly I’m surprised there is surprise,” admits director David Leitch.
“I mean the sexual tension between the pair in the last movie was off the scale. Every time they spoke, every time they look at each other, you just knew these two were going to end up together.”
Hobbs and Shaw takes place two years after the events of Fate of the Furious.
Hobbs and Shaw have been living together and are now planning to wed on the beach in Cancun, however, the emergence of the Idris Elba’s Brixton Lore, a genetically enhanced cyber-soldier who used to date Deckard Shaw, complicates matters.
“Okay, so, at first the whole ex-boyfriend-crashing-the-scene situation seems a little cliché,” admits Leitch.
“But, he’s a genetically enhanced cyber-soldier! How would you feel if your boyfriend’s ex was a genetically enhanced cyber-soldier?”
Sure enough, Hobbs doesn’t take it well and so handles it the only way he knows how – by putting on a really tight t-shirt and driving a big car really fast.
“It’s a kind of romantic comedy car chase movie,” says Leitch.
“If you dug the homo-erotic undertones of all the Fast and Furious pictures, then you are going to love this.”
