Details of a potential Heat sequel are emerging and appear to centre around Vincent and Neil sharing an appartement, and having to raise a toddler who was abandoned on their doorstep.
“Okay, so, there’s no point in doing a sequel without both Neil and Vincent,” explained director Michael Mann.
“So, we’ll just say that after the original, an ambulance got to Neil just in time. So then, he wants to renounce his life of crime, and then of course, Vincent has got nowhere to live, so they move in together and, you know, sparks fly, hilarious consequences, all that.
“Then, one day, the doorbell rings and, oh no! Someone’s left a cute little three-year old girl, and they have to look after her. It’s hilarious, this tough bank robber has to play horsey and Vincent has to braid her hair.
“It’s definitely going to be a lighter picture than the first one. Although, the original script for Heat did actually have a lot more jokes – when Neil sits down in the coffee shop scene? Originally, he sits on a whoopee cushion. After the bank robbery? Turns into a massive pie-fight. I’ve always regretted just how much of the humour we had to leave out, but the sequel is going to make up for that.”
The Miami Vice legend admitted that he was taking inspiration from one of his favourite films.
“Yeah, I guess there’s a lot of Three Men and Little Lady here but, you know what? It’s a classic. It’s one of the greatest American films of all time. I watch that, what? Once a week? Something like that – Fiona Shaw trying to get with Tom Selleck? That’s just great.”
Mann is also lining up a potential third film in the trilogy in which Vincent and Neil have to escape the mafia by hiding out in a nunnery.
“Nuns on the Run, man. Now there’s a classic crime picture.”
