Heat sequel sees Vince develop super-powers and battle space-crime across the galaxy

The newly announced sequel to Heat, to be released as Michael Mann’s first novel, will see Heat’s protagonist Vince Hanna gain super-powers and battle space-crime across the galaxy.

“I’ve been longing to explore what happened to Vince after that cathartic shootout at the airport,” explained the directing legend.

“In my head, the moments following Neil’s death are clear. Vince sits quietly, holding the dead man’s hand and reflecting on what his life has become when, all of a sudden, a giant flying saucer lands next to him. A bunch of aliens all come out and their leader goes ‘Vincent Hanna, you are the future of crime fighting in space,’ then shoots him with some sort of ray that gives him super powers.”

Mann explained that he was still working through the plot of the rest of the novel.

“I’ve pretty much got the beats of the story. Vince comes to terms with his super-space-powers and starts solving loads of crimes. Then one night he finds a small flying saucer in his garden that he’s been gifted by the aliens and goes off into space to fight space-crimes.”

It’s at this point that the sequel picks up the themes of the film.

“Yeah, I wanted to tie it back. So, Vince is flying round the galaxy battling space-crime, and he comes across this nine-tentacled, bug eyed alien bank robber from Rigel-9, he becomes determined to bring him down and uses all his detective work and space-super-powers to catch the alien in the act of robbing a space-bank and they have a shoot-out and he kills the alien and as he’s comforting the alien as it dies he holds a tentacle, looks into its bug eyes and wonders if, really, they’re that different after all.

“Makes you think, right?”

Mann also confirmed he was working on ideas for a third story.

“Yeah, either Vince goes back in time and battles medieval criminals, of Vince goes to hell and battles demons.”
