Historians working in 2080 have managed to pinpoint the root cause of the catastrophic societal breakdown that occurred during the 2050s and revealed that it all began with a film in which ladies were actual Ghostbusters.
“That was 2016. Pretty much everything was fine before that,” explained Stewart James, a leading professor of the History of the Woke Wars.
“Then this film came out that suggested ladies could actually form a company that caught ghosts and it generated an unbalance within societies around the world. The idea was so radical, and in many cases so offensive, that a schism was created from which the human race simply could not address without the terrifying violence and repression that came about in the middle of the century.”
Whilst an overall acceptance throughout that world that men and women were largely equal had been growing during the latter half of the 20th Century, the lady Ghostbuster was a concept that had never been conceived of prior to the 2016 film. At the time, there is documented controversy on the long defunct Twitter platform (or ‘Musker’ as it would become in the months before its complete collapse), perhaps a little more than when lady superhero films were announced, but nothing egregious.
“There was something about a lady ghostbuster that seemed to be ruinous at a societal level, even though it wasn’t obvious at the time. It ran deep. I don’t think it was rational, I don’t think we’ll ever understand why, but it’s clear in the graffiti written around the time of the fall of both the Chinese Empire and the United States that people were never reconciled to the concept of the lady ghostbuster.”
Professor James also revealed that films about a black mermaid and a lady terminator probably didn’t help.
“No, I wouldn’t have thought so. But it was the lady ghostbusters that really broke everything and caused countless billions of lives and left us still trying to rebuild some forty years on.”
