The new Flash trailer was the highlight of Sunday evening’s extravaganza of burly men playing catch, and it featured the long-rumoured return of Batman in the form of Adam West.
Considered the definitive reading of Batman by sensible people, Adam West played Batman in the dangerously groovy TV incarnation of the Dark Knight. In recent years, it has become fashionable for Batman to be portrayed as a grumpy, mumbling psychopath, however West’s version of Batman was a witty, sexy, playboy who fought crime with his young ward and lover Robin and then grooved to the latest hip sounds.
“Batman’s needed a reboot for years,” explained Bat-expert Stewart James.
“The last one sounded like he gargled gravel, and the whole thing seemed to have been filmed in a dark hole in the middle of the night. It’ll be good to get back to a Batman who you can both see and understand.”
The Flash sees Barry Allen travel back in time to the 1960s to prevent his mother’s murder. Whilst doing so, he runs into 60s Batman, who’s just fended off a shark with a spray and was trying to dispose of a bomb. Sensibly, he decides that seems like much more fun than coming back to the present and hanging out with a bunch of self-important superheroes who wouldn’t know a joke if it fell on them. He decides to stay with Batman and his actions cause the creation of a multiverse.
Alongside the Adam West version of Batman, there are rumours the film’s multiverse will also feature the Michael Keaton and Christian Bale versions of the character, along with Linda Carter as Wonder Woman, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as different Spidermans, Patrick Stewart as Jun-Luc Picard, and Timothy Dalton as James Bond.
