Friends reunion to be a gritty examination of middle-aged disappointment

Friends reunion

A Friends reunion episode currently in the works is set to be a gritty examination of disappointment and disillusionment in middle-age.

It will be a one-off episode that looks at where the Central Perk gang are today, and how everything went so wrong.

Opening with a grossly overweight Chandler smoking outside a diner, the camera moves inside to find Monica explaining to their grown-up twins that both she and Chandler are going to try living apart, but they still care for each other.

Chandler can then be heard shouting from outside that Monica just cares for her fitness instructor more.

We then cut to Joey who is in a shabby apartment in bed with a woman apologising for something and saying that he must have had too much wine.

A cellphone rings and the woman, who is now revealed to be Rachel, answers.

Ross speaks.

“You’ve got to come home. It’s Phoebe.”

After years of living on the streets following a crippling gambling and substance addiction, Phoebe has died of hypothermia.

High jinks and laughs follow as the gang head to Phoebe’s funeral and Chandler and Monica try to maintain their sham of a marriage in front of their old friends while Joey and Rachel try to keep their affair hidden from an oblivious Ross.

The One Where All the Dreams Died is currently in pre-production and will be ready for release next year.
