Following the success of last year’s Love Actually sequel, there was delight at the news that this year’s Red Nose day will see a sequel to the much-loved nineties romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral.
However, that delight is sure to be tempered by the news that the sequel will be a bloody revenge thriller.
“Initially, we thought it would be tremendous fun to catch up with the gang and find out what they’re up to no they’ve reached late Middle-age. Are Charles and Carrie still together? Has Tom found love? That sort of thing,” said writer Richard Curtis.
“But I kept coming back to the appalling way, Charles and his friends had treated Henrietta and realised that it had to be a story of her brutal revenge against them all.
Beginning in a tasteful apartment, we see a bed covered in knives and guns, the camera pans up to reveal Henrietta who nods in satisfaction before packing everything into a holdall.
We then cut to Fiona at lunch with friends – all of a sudden, a blaze of gunfire shatters the window and Fi lies in a pool of blood and pomegranate jus.
Tom is seen, pipe in mouth, surveying his extensive farmlands. He smiles with satisfaction and exhales a stream of smoke before a huge machete plunges through his chest.
Finally, we see Charles and Carrie, in a beautiful home counties stately home, they smile lovingly at each other and the entire building explodes.
Henrietta, silhouetted by the flames of the explosion, walks towards the camera, a smile playing on her face.
Richard Curtis also hinted next year’s Red Nose day will feature a sequel to Notting Hill that plays out as a Bergman-esque existential drama about the decline of humanity
