Oscars organisation The Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has admitted that it simply didn’t bother watching Chloe Zhao’s The Rider because no one fancied it.
The admission explains why Zhao’s film remained surprisingly absent from any nominations.
“Yeah, I’ll be honest, we got the DVD and everything,” explained Academy representative Roger Stewart.
“But, you know, it looked really difficult and depressing – guy tries to cope with brain injury – so we didn’t get round to watching it.
“I think we ended up watching Despicable Me 2 again instead.
“Man, those minions crack me up.”
Eyebrows were initially raised when the Oscar nominations were announced and The Rider – one of the most beautiful and moving films of recent years – was absent, but middling singalong diversion Bohemian Rhapsody was nominated in several categories.
“Yeah, but come on, that was brilliant.
“Trust me, watch it with your friends and a couple of bottles of wine and you’ll all be singing ‘We are the Champions’ by the end.
“You’re not getting that in that in that The Rider of yours, are you?”
Mr Stewart also admitted, somewhat sheepishly, that the Academy hadn’t got round to watching Leave No Trace either as it looked ‘boring’ and they decided to have a Twilight marathon instead.
