It has been announced that Widows star Elizabeth Debicki will take on the role of Princess Diana in the new season of the Crown.
The depiction of Princess Diana’s life has been highly anticipated but, in what many have seen as a controversial choice, producers have decided to focus on the Princess’s rumoured secret life as a costumed crime-fighter.
“I think it’s fairly well documented that Princess Diana had a number of superpowers, including super-strength, some limited x-ray vision and, if not the ability to fly, then certainly the ability to hover above the ground for extended periods of time,” explained Crown creator Peter Morgan.
“So, I don’t think it’s controversial to focus on that aspect of her life.”
The new season will begin with an origin story episode which sees a young Lady Diana Spencer leading a quiet life that is turned on its head when, as she was popping to the local Spar for twenty Regal, she is bitten by a radioactive Earl and develops her royal superpowers.
After a turbulent few weeks of confusion, Princess Margaret begins to mentor her and show her how she can use her powers for good. She slowly learns how to control the powers and after using them to successfully foil a mugging in St James Park, she finds the confidence to adopt her superhero name – Princess Diana, and the episode ends with her donning the familiar crown and costume that criminals so came to fear in the eighties and nineties.
“We needed an imposing actor to take on this role,” continued Morgan.
“And at seven and a quarter metres tall, there are few actors more imposing than Elizabeth Debicki. We’re very happy to have her.”
Rumours that the Debicki’s Princess Diana will crossover and join The Avengers as part of phase 5 are, as yet, unconfirmed.
