Bethesda has confirmed that the latest installment of its hugely popular fantasy series of games will be set in Belgium.
It is the first time that a game in the series will take place outside the fictional continent of Tamriel.
Director Todd Howard explained the decision.
“The key theme that emerged from some early story meetings was that the plot for Elder Scrolls 6 would focus heavily on waffles,” he explained.
“Now, obviously, Tamriel has a rich history with the ancient races of Khajiit and Argonian, but the one thing it doesn’t have is waffles.
“There’s no waffle houses, no waffle makers, nothing. Now we thought about trying to retcon waffles into the lore by having an annual waffle day which was the only time anyone ate waffles, but it felt forced.”
Ultimately, the team settled on the idea of moving the adventure to Belgium.
“It just made sense – you want waffles, you go to Belgium.”
The story will begin with the player waking up with no memory and a plate of waffles. Never having seen a waffle before, the terrified character throws them across the room. But what he doesn’t realise is that they are magic waffles and when they hit a wall they create a portal to Belgium.
So begins the epic quest.
Mr Howard went on to explain what fans can expect.
“Well, lots of waffles, obviously. Belgian people, there’s a lot of them, and some nice picturesque medieval towns.
“Its going to be great.”
Elder Scrolls VI: Waffles of Destiny is currently in production and no release date has been announced.
