Drunk Masterchef due later this year

The BBC has announced a new variation on the popular Masterchef format will make its debut later this year.

Drunk Masterchef will see contestants head to the pub to drink six pints or a bottle of wine and then return to the studio to fricassee things whilst Greg Wallace grunts at them.

“I think it is the natural step for the Masterchef format to take,” said producer Karen Ross.

“I don’t think that there’s anyone who hasn’t enjoyed watch a young amateur chef successful create a beef wellington souffle and thought ‘well that’s all very well, but could they do it after a night on the drink.’

“Well, now we’re going to find out.”

It is understood that the programme will have a more festive feel than standard Masterchef with an ABBA compilation playing loudly whilst the chefs create their dishes and judges can even award bonus points for contestants accurately singing the high bits in Winner Takes it All using a root vegetable as a microphone.

Other countries who have their own versions of Masterchef will be watching the new variation closely, although it is understood that Australia have already ruled out adopting the new format as they always thought that was how it worked anyway.

If successful, the BBC is likely to follow it up with Naked Masterchef and Fighting Masterchef in an attempt to keep the format fresh.
