Following the success of the Downton Abbey film, producers have already announced a sequel and confirmed that it will be considerably darker than the original.
“I was very happy with the first film,” explained writer Julian Fellowes.
“But I think that what fans really want is to explore the darker side of Downton.”
The sequel will begin with Jim Carter’s Mr Carson violently beating a drug dealer in a run-down terraced slum in the village.
He then heads upstairs and pulls a disheveled, incoherent and clearly drug-addled Lady Mary from a battered sofa before bundling her into the back of a car and returning her to Downton Abbey.
“Lady Mary’s crippling heroin addiction will be at the heart of the film,” confirmed Fellowes.
“We see just how low she sinks as shanks Mrs Hughes in the leg in order to make off with the Crawley silver.”
Finally, her father, Lord Crawley, played by Hugh Bonneville, snaps and the film ends in an orgy of brutal violence.
“The Crawley rampage is going to be an incredible action climax to the film,” chuckled the writing legend.
Arming himself with a shotgun and pistol, Crawley strips to the waist and heads into the night to bring justice to those whose crimes have so ruined his daughter.
“I don’t want to give too much away, but when the sun rises over Downton Village the flames of the drug pushers’ neighbourhood can be seen across Yorkshire.”
Downton Abbey: Blood on the Moon is currently in preproduction and has no confirmed release date.
