The BBC has announced that this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special will, in a break from recent tradition, be screened in August of next year.
It has yet to give out the exact time of broadcast, but it is likely to be around three-ish on a Tuesday afternoon.
“Simply put, we were struggling to find the right moment to show it on Christmas day,” said BBC executive Matt Baker.
“So then we figured – Boxing Day. That’s still Christmas, we’ll do it then. But then we got a bit drunk and forgot about it.
“Then, when we came to in the morning we decided on New Year’s Day. But then, the most depressing day of the year when all the fun times are over and you’ve just got grey skies, a half-arsed diet and January to look forward to – time for a wacky space-romp?
“Obviously it was a mad idea, so we pushed it forward to March, then Easter, then we figured – screw it, if we’re going to show the Doctor Who Christmas special at Easter, we may as well show it in August.
“It should be fine, Doctor Who fans are a pretty chill bunch.”
Doctor Who fan @PeterDavidsonsJumper responded to the news with the following tweet.
“I will dedicate my life to hunting down whoever made this decision. They are now my blood enemies.”
By screening the Doctor Who Christmas special next August, the BBC have freed up enough time to show a nine hour Christmas Eastenders special in which everyone is angry and someone’s cat dies.
So that’s alright then.
