Denis Villeneuve wants to make third Dune film based on Arrakian rap scene

With the second Dune film confirmed, director Denis Villeneuve has stated that he is also hoping to make a third Dune film based on the rap scene amongst the Freman on Arrakis.

“I think that the biggest mistake with the eighties Dune, other than Sting in his pants, is that David [Lynch] left the Arrakian rap scene completely unexplored,” explained Villeneuve.

“In Frank Herbert’s original books, particularly the latter ones in the series, rap music plays a huge part. Book 12 – Dune: Beatbox Wizards of Chusuk – is literally about an intergalactic MC battle in which the freshest Arrakian street rappers go head-to-head with off-world MCs who have the backing of the emperor.

“Apart from the deleted scene of Kyle MacLachlan doing the ‘Hip Hop, a hippy to the hippy’ bit from Rapper’s delight, Lynch completely ignored Arrakian rap, and I think that’s what, ultimately, did for his film.”

Villeneuve was reluctant to give too much away about any potential third Dune film.

“I can tell you the opening? The opening is so clear in my head,” he said.

“Black screen. Dope beat kicks in. Camera pans down to Arrakis. Beat gets louder. Camera zooms down to the planet surface and tracks across the sand. We pass a giant sandworm wearing a Run DMC hat and chains. Into a Freman camp where a Freman DJ is on the decks. The crowd is going crazy, then out steps Pal Atreides and begins to spit some monster rhymes.

“From there on, it’s an epic bonanza of intergalactic beats, and super-fresh space rap that is going to blow people’s minds.”

Although unconfirmed, it is rumoured the third film will be called Dune III: Arrakis on the Wheels of Steel, and will feature a spin-off rap album by Stellen Skarsgard and Charlotte Rampling.
