Experts agree that the film industry is suffering a full-blown crisis after it was announced that only 30 people went to the cinema, worldwide, during the summer of 2017.
The summer period is traditional seen as critical for the film industry and it would normally hope for millions of people to watch their latest hit films in the cinema, not 30.
“It’s pretty bleak,” said film expert Mark Norman.
“30 people is not really enough to sustain a major entertainment industry, and we’re fairly sure that two of them were an elderly couple from Chorley who only popped into the cinema because it was raining.”
The disappointing figures come in the wake of a successful start to the year with both La La Land and Wonder Woman cleaning up at the box office.
There are a number of theories as to why the summer was so poor.
“Well, people were possibly really busy,” speculated Mr Norman
“I mean, it’s summer, you’ve got to mow the lawn, pop to the shops and then get the bar-b-que on, that doesn’t leave a great deal of time to see whatever superhero film is out that week.”
“Also, the marketing was a little off. Did you know that there was a new Mummy film out with Tom Cruise in this summer? I didn’t. Completely passed me by.”
However, the film industry has a plan to turn things around and make next year a real winner.
“More superhero films,” said Mr Norman
“I mean, I haven’t checked, but it’s a fair assumption.”
