Following the huge success of Todd Phillips’ Joker, there is a real and genuine concern that a Broadway musical based on the film could be inevitable.
The film, considered by people who haven’t seen enough films to be one of the best ever, has been a huge and unexpected hit, which likely means there will be a flurry of ill-conceived and half-baked ideas to further monetise the property, beginning with a Broadway musical.
“I would imagine that a Joker musical will arrive in late 2021,” said Kelly Grace, Professor of Terrible Ideas at Harvard University.
“You’ve got that bit where he does a little dance on the steps, that’s got Act 1 climax written all-over it, a hundred Jokers dancing on spangly steps to something ironically upbeat? Pure Broadway.
“You could even throw in Send in the Clowns, Tears of a Clown and something by the Insane Clown Posse to save time writing the songs.”
Experts are currently predicting the Joker musical will star a reasonably well-respected British actor in the lead role and close within a month.
However, if it does prove successful then its conceivable that there will be a movie adaptation of the musical adaptation of the film and then, frankly, we may as well just all give up.
