There was disappointment at the news that Sam Mendes had chosen actors who aren’t even once-in-a-generation musical talents to play the four members of The Beatles in his new films.
“The key thing about The Beatles is that they are once-in-a-generation musical talents, there has literally no-one who has ever made music like them,” said Beatles fan Stewart James.
“So, I don’t see how these actors, who are great, you know, in other films, but who aren’t once-in-a-generation musical talents. I don’t see how we are meant to believe they are the Beatles. I don’t see how it could work.”
Mr James brushed off suggestions that, as talented actors with experience of portraying people with different skills, the four men could convincing play the Beatles.
“No, I can’t see it. I just can’t. You’ll be watching the film and there’ll be Joseph Quinn and he’ll be fine but then you’ll realise that he never wrote Something, you know? It’ll be really jarring and just take you out of the whole thing.”
However, when asked for actors who were once-in-a-generation musical talents who could take on the roles, Mr James admitted to being stumped.
“I don’t know. Beyoncé’s very good isn’t she? And she was in that Austin Powers film. What about Sting?”
