When cinephiles think of Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev, they think of an epic story of artistic freedom, auto-didacticism, and religion in medieval Russia. They don’t think of sexy nuns dancing provocatively to Madonna’s Like A Prayer.
Until now!
Platinum Heat, an enterprising burlesque venue in Chelmsford, has adapted the Cannes prize-winner for an evening of sensual entertainment.
“I was unwinding after spending an evening dancing in a big champagne glass,” explained burlesque dancer Jenny ‘Flaps’ Flaperton.
“I decided to put on a film to relax to, and realised it had been a while since I’d watched Andrei Rublev. I popped it on and made myself a cup of tea, soon enough, I was swept up in Tarkovsky’s mesmerising vision of 15th Century Russia.
“It was during the fifth section, The Last Judgement, that I noticed just how sexy the whole thing was. You’ve got Andrei in his robe, all the stone carvers with their big rocks. Daniil is a super-sexy medieval monk. It could be perfect for out burlesque club.”
Jenny took her idea to the choreographers at Platinum Heat and they agreed. After months of planning, they are ready to debut their new show – The Andrei Rublev Follies.
There are eight parts to the evening to match the eight parts of the film.
The Jester
A sexy Jester in a peephole bra dances a routine that uses sensual movement to provide a scabrous and bitter condemnation of repressive states.
Theophanes the Greek
In a recreation of Theophanes’ workshop, sexy monks in suspenders use teasing movement to convey how artistic creation can often be a repetitive chore.
The Passion
An erotic, yet tasteful recreation of the death of Christ. The dancers’ backless chaps providing a witty commentary on the sometimes ignorant response to art.
The Holiday
Naked pagans.
The Last Judgement
As sexy stone carvers rub their rocks provocatively, a single leather-clad dancer performs a terrifying Last Judgement-themed pole dance
The Raid
A spectacular routine with fire and horses in which topless Tartars depict the sacking of Vladimir.
Silence
A silent routine in which Andrei, depicted by a performer in simple, plain underwear, conveys their suffering through a harrowing tap dance.
The Bell
A riotous celebration of Andrei Rublev’s painting as the whole cast can-can around a huge bell that represent Andrei’s realisation that his art can, ultimately, bring great joy to people.
“There’s something for everyone,” continued Jenny.
“If you enjoy Russian cinema, you’ll love the tributes to Tarkovsky, but if you like boobs, then there’s boobs.”
The show follows on from Platinum Heat’s hugely successful burlesque adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler.
