Red Dead Redemption 2 has been a huge hit with gamer fans the world over, but what many don’t realise is that the huge 30 square mile set used to create the game now sits abandoned on outskirts of Edinburgh.
Over the eight years that went into the creation of the hit game the set was a bustling hubbub of cowboys, Indians and horses.
It now stands silent and empty in a bleak Scottish winter.
“I don’t think that many people understand the work that is entailed in creating a game of this scale,” said game expert Emma Gosling.
“Whilst there is some extremely complex coding at work, the first stage in any game is the creation of the set on which the game will be played.
“For some, that is easier than others. For Doom, producers wanted a realistic depiction of Hell, so they just went to Leeds.
“However, for something like Red Dead, the entire set must be created from the ground up and what is so impressive is that not only did Rockstar create a convincing version of the old west, but they did so in Scotland, near their HQ.”
There is some confusion as to why the set hasn’t been dismantled.
“Well, I’ve heard suggestions that they are saving it for a future sequel,” continued Gosling.
“But that seems unlikely as any new sequel would be on a new generation of consoles and so would need a set of much higher resolution.”
However, fans wishing to visit the set may want to think again as to get to it they would have to cross the set used for Grand Theft Auto V, and that’s full of criminals, maniacs and really dangerous drivers.
