It has been revealed that 2020 is actually a new Donnie Darko Director’s Cut that explores quite how badly the timeline would warp and corrupt if Donnie were unable to fix it.
“I began working on this new director’s cut at the end of last year,” admitted director Richard Kelly.
“In the original film, a second timeline is created when the jet engine crashes through a wormhole to land on Donnie’s house. Donnie then fixes that by understanding the basic concepts of time travel and allows himself to be crushed by the jet engine in the new timeline.
“At least, I think that’s what happens. It’s pretty confusing, and I’m not really sure what all that stuff with the rabbit is about.”
“What I thought would be interesting to explore, though, was just how bad things would get if Donnie didn’t fix the new timeline? What would happen?”
The director’s admission explains quite why 2020 has been such tsunami of catastrophe and misery. But, unfortunately, it does look like it is set to continue.
“Well, the problem is, I never gave any real thought to ending this new Director’s Cut. To be honest, I’m not great at endings at the best of times. I mean, anyone who’s seen Southland Tales can appreciate that, with the flying ice-cream truck and everything.
“This is really tricky though, I mean, how old would Donnie be in 2020. Mid-fifties? Would he even remember how time-travel works? Could he still get back to his old house to have the jet-engine fall on him? Do I still have to do stuff with that rabbit?”
“I don’t know, man. Difficult.”
While Kelly works on a way to complete the new Donnie Darko Director’s Cut and bring the 2020 timeline to a close, many people are starting to ask why we couldn’t have ended up in that alternative timeline from Sliding Doors instead.
“Would have been a bit nicer,” said Kelly Grace, a woman from Chelmsford who is a bit sick of it all
“The worst thing that happens in that timeline is that Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t get off with him from Four Wedding and a Funeral.”
