Whilst Todd Phillips’ Joker is being hailed by critics as a masterpiece, there is a growing backlash amongst viewers who have criticised it for being just not that funny.
“I don’t know what all the fuss is about,” said Stewart James, who was leaving a Friday evening showing.
“There’s this guy and he’s a comedian and he’s a clown, so I’m thinking – ‘great, this is going to be properly hilarious’ – but it’s really not. If anything, it’s really depressing with this lonely guy going a bit mad.”
Film blogger Eleanor Gay agreed.
“I thought it was just rubbish. I mean, if you’re going to make a film about a clown then you’ve got to make it funny or what’s the point?
“It seems like they started off making a film about a nice clown, and then turned him into a mad psycho criminal. But if you’re going to do that then you shouldn’t make him a clown because its just not realistic.”
Other criticisms of the film include –
- No pies to the face.
- No brightly coloured smoke-belching car with wheels falling off.
- Shoes seemed average size.
Cinema-goer Barry Onions summed up the feelings of many.
“After It, and now Joker, I don’t think that Hollywood have really got the hang of clown films.
“They should probably stick to superheroes.”
