Further details of Ben Wheatley’s sequel to The Meg have emerged, including the surprising news that the titular Meg is, this time, an ally.

“How to follow up The Meg,” said Wheatley.

“Initially, we had ideas – multiple megalodons all joining forces to subjugate humanity was one, the megalodon from the first film revealing he was Jason Statham’s father was another.

“Ultimately, we decided to twist the whole premise. What if Jason Statham was forced to team up with The Meg!”

Jason Statham begins the film back in Vietnam, having a pint. But when reports of dead boat crews and terrified beach-goers reach him, he realises he has to go back to work. But when he reaches the site of an attack, he uses science to determine that the attacks weren’t perpetrated by a megalodon, but by something much bigger. All of a sudden, rearing up out of the water behind him, a 500-foot long, prehistoric mega-whale.

“At that point,” continues Wheatley, “Jason Statham knows that even he can’t punch a 500-foot long, prehistoric mega-whale in the face. He needs an ally.”

Jason Statham gathers together Suyin, Mac, Jaxx and the old gang. But he needs one other, a critical member of his team, so he visits an old coastal bar in India where he finds a drunken, disillusioned, broken-down megalodon – The Meg from the first film – and convinces him to help.

“It’s a fascinating dynamic. Initially Jason Statham and the Meg don’t get along, their prejudices run too deep, but slowly Jason Statham learns more about the megalodon’s ways, and The Meg learns more about Jason Statham’s ways and soon, grudging respect becomes friendship.”

The Meg 2 is now planned as the second part of a trilogy that will ultimately see Jason Statham, The Meg, and the giant prehistoric mega-whale all team up to fight crime.
