This was always going to be the strangest of Oscar ceremonies. From the choice to hold the ceremony in a big field with some cows in the corner to the decision to have a pop-up McDonalds take-away in front of the stage.
However, here are five surprises that no one could have expected.
1, La La Land is mistakenly awarded Best Picture for the fourth year running
No one could have thought that there would be yet another error with the announcement envelopes which, once again, saw La La Land be awarded Best Picture, but it happened.
Rita Moreno reads out the nominees for best picture, looks a bit confused, and announces that La La Land has won. There is a moment of silence before an Oscar official rushes onstage, apologises, and confirms that Nomadland is the real winner.
“We really should sack the guy who does the envelopes,” says one Oscar insider.
2, The manifestation of the demon Bezamul
During a lull in proceedings after Soul winning best Score, there is a powerful smell of sulphur, smoke starts billowing from the stage, there is a crash of lightning and Bezamul appears on stage.
“I am Bezamul and humanity shall become my slaves. You, false idols of the screen must go-“
Happily, Best Actress nominee Vanessa Kirby is a trained exorcist and returns Bezamul to the depths of Hell before he can continue.
3, Come On Eileen is played after every winner is announced.
It is unclear whether this was by accident or design, but after each award was announced, while the recipient makes their way to the stage, Come On Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners plays.
It gets a little trying as the ceremony goes on.
4, Frances McDormand wears a clown suit
Accepting her third Best Actress award, Frances McDormand choses to make an unusual sartorial statement by wearing a full clown suit and make-up.
“Frances is passionate about clowns and chose to wear the clown suit as protest against the constant depictions of clowns in films as psychopaths and murderers,” said a friend.
Fair enough.
5, Still no Oscars for 1989’s Road House
It’s a disgrace. A ruddy disgrace.
Despite the surprises, the Oscars were a success so Congratulations to the winners and up yours to the losers, you big fat losers.
See you again next year.
