Success of ‘Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ could see it turned into a board game

In the wake of the critical and box-office success of the new fantasy film Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, rumours are beginning to emerge that suggest a new board game based on the film could be created.

“The fantasy setting, the monsters, the different characters, I really think this whole thing could really work as a game,” said game expert Kelly Grace.

“Maybe not based rigidly on the story from the movie, but more just based in the same world, in the same setting. I mean, the whole feel of the film is great, it’s super-atmospheric, it’s rich. I can imagine kids playing in the film’s world maybe exploring dungeons and battling some dragons.

However, others have been quick to poor cold water on the idea.

“A board game based on this film? In a fantasy world? Who would ever play something like that? Board games are about snakes, ladders, boots owning properties in London and charging top hats rent, Mrs Plum murdering someone,” said Stewart James, Monopoly World Champion.

“They’re not about either dungeons or dragons. I mean, you’re navigating dungeons? You’re deciding whether to loot treasure or not? You’re having battles? All just using a dice? It doesn’t make sense, you’d need a dice with, like 24 sides or something.

“No, it’s a fine film, but I don’t see it ever working as a board game.”

Despite scepticism from Mr James and others like him, the rumours persist that a board game could be produced based on the film and that, by this Christmas, people everywhere could be playing Honor Among Thieves – and that could just be the first in a huge series of Honor Among Thieves games that would follow.

And stay with me on this, how about a BOARDLESS game? Where you keep track of things on paper, and mostly use your imagination? You can use different kinds of dice to randomize results, and everyone plays a different character with unique abilities? You could call it Labyrinths and Lizards, or something. I think it could catch on.
