As Autumn approaches, details have begun to emerge about the new series of perennial Saturday night favourite Strictly Come Dancing.
In a surprising deviation from the formula, producers have announced they will be abandoning the traditional viewer phone-in in favour of a Fortnite style battle royale contest.
“We kind of wanted to shake up the Sunday programme a little,” explained producer Sarah James.
“There was only so many times you could get someone from Westlife on to exclusively unveil their new single, you know what I mean?”
As such, the Sunday show will no longer be a results show, but will instead be a battle royale-style fight to the death.
The contestants will be parachuted onto an island, and those with the highest judges’ scores will be given impressive and powerful weaponry.
Those who failed to impress the judges will be given a blunt letter opener.
The contestants will then have half an hour to use their wits and combat skills to hunt down and slaughter one of their number.
“I’m really excited about the new format as it makes everything a little more unpredictable,” continued James.
“For example, this year we have Sam Allardyce. In the past, he’d be the comedy old man we’d have on for everyone to laugh at.
“However, this year, Sam’s close combat skills and ruthless brutality could well see him really excel in the battle royale aspects of the competition.”
Producers will be hoping that this year’s battle royale experiment will prove more successful than 2009, when a series of challenges inspired by the Saw movies were introduced with tragic and horrifying results.
