Stephen King has announced that he has written a new ending for the upcoming miniseries adaptation of The Stand which features everyone agreeing to disagree and then having a nice party.
“Seriously, I can’t believe I didn’t do this when I first wrote the book,” explained King.
“I mean, you have this epic tale of the near-extinction of humanity and good and evil. The only real way to end that story is everyone just agreeing that we’ve all got a right to our views and then having a nice party with a really tasty homemade cheese dip and some excellent wine.”
The new series tells the same story up until when Larry, Stu, Ralph, and Glen walk over to Flagg’s compound, but instead of confronting the Dark Man, they are there to issue an invitation to the party.
“Yeah, it’s a really tense moment. Larry invites Flagg and everyone. There’s a big, dramatic pause and then they agree, and everyone heads back to Boulder.
“There is a bit of tension at the party over music choices, because the Boulder guys like Dire Straits and Rick James and Flagg’s people are more into classic rock like Hendrix and Creedence, but ultimately, it’s a success.”
The new ending appears to be a plea from King for everyone to get along.
“That’s right. Here we’ve got two separate groups and they’re having a nice party. They’re like ‘yeah, we like baking cakes and you like crucifying people. Whatever. Everyone’s different, now let’s dance to Superfreak.’”
It is expected that the new version of the Stand could lead the way to a new version of The Shining that ends with the Torrances making up over cocoa and a game of Scrabble and a new version of IT where Pennywise gets a job in Mike’s library.
