As shooting on Steven Spielberg’s version of West Side Story wraps, the director has shared an image from the set that shows the spaceship.
West Side Story is a musical that tells of a love affair spanning rival New York gangs. However, in a typical Spielbergian twist, this new version will feature a massive spaceship covered with lights that lands in New York at the end.
“Hey, I love West Side Story,” explained the ET director.
“But, man, that ending is a downer.
“I wanted to change that up, to offer some hope for these difficult times. So, at the end of my version, as Tony is wondering the streets believing that Maria is dead, an alien spaceship lands and tells him that Maria is fine.
“Then we finish with all the aliens and gang members dancing to a great new, upbeat song called ‘We’re All Happy Now.’
“I think it’s a real evolution of Sondheim’s original that he would definitely approve of.”
It is expected that, should his new version of West Side Story prove successful, Spielberg is planning to tackle another musical.
His version of Les Miserables will follow the original text until the failed revolution, then aliens take Javert and Valjean into space to help fight space-crime.
