Razzies extends unfunny streak to 42 years

The Golden Raspberry awards, the ‘satirical’ take on the Oscars for which there aren’t enough quote marks in the world, has extended its unfunny streak to an incredible 42 years.

Every year, with terrible regularity, the Razzies team create a list of films that they don’t like, and then tell everyone about the films that they didn’t like, and finally, the make some trophies with the names of the films that they didn’t like written on them.

This subtle and insightful satire reveals the ultimate thought-provoking point of the Golden Raspberries – there are some films that that they don’t like.

Incredibly, despite purporting to be a satirical parody of the Oscars, it has never once been remotely funny. An unfunny streak which this year extends to a staggering 42 years which now means it has been not funny for longer than these classic not-funny things – Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Kim Jong-un, and Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time.

This year, perhaps more than any other year, the Razzies have really bolstered their not funny status by telling a 12-year-old girl she wasn’t very good at acting, provoking furious argument over what exactly is the opposite of funny.

Never ones to rest on their laurels, though, the Golden Raspberry team have no plans to give up and next year hope to extend their not-funny streak to an amazing 43 years.

It seems likely that they’ll succeed as well, unless someone involved with the organisation and ceremony accidentally tells a joke, but that’s never happened before, so it seems unlikely to happen now.
