The official title for the new Stephen Moffat adaptation of Dracula will be Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
The title seems to indicate that the new adaptation will take inspiration from the 1992 classic.
“Well, I’ve always admired the gothic menace and dark, brooding atmosphere of the original novel,” said Mr Moffat, after the title was announced.
“So I was as impressed as anyone when Francis Ford Coppola managed to improve on that by putting in loads of bosoms and having Anthony Hopkins shout at everyone.
“I think that now, for most people, it’s hard to really imagine Dracula without loads of bosoms and Anthony Hopkins shouting. It really is the definitive version of the story.”
Whilst Mr Moffat planned to retain both the nudity and shouting of the original Coppola version, he was planning on introducing a surprising new aspect to the story.
“Time travel,” he confirmed.
“Obviously, I’ve just spent a lot of time working on Doctor Who and so it seems clear to me that what is needed is the ability of Dracula to travel through time and suck the blood of cavemen from the past and space aliens from the future.”
He also revealed his hope for his adaptation.
“Well, it’s foolish pride, I’m sure,” he chuckled.
“But, maybe one day people will look back on my adaptation as I do on Coppola’s and perhaps they will be moved to make their own adaption – Stephen Moffat’s Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula.”
