New Prince musical to focus on the now King Charles’ time as an 80s funk megastar

Ryan Coogler’s newly announced Prince musical will focus on the now King Charles time in the 80s when he was a funk megastar who dominated the MTV music scene.

“Hey, like everyone in America, I love King Charles and I wish We still had the royal family,” explained Coogler.

“So, last year, I was watching the coronation with some sausage rolls and nice bunting, and someone told me that when the King was Prince in the 80s, he was a funk megastar. So, I looked it up and, sure enough, it’s true. He was the most musically innovative pop star in the world for pretty much the whole decade and commercially successful as well. What a life!”

The film will tell the story of how the young Prince Charles broke with royal protocol in 1984 and released Purple Rain against his father Prince Phillip’s wishes, but was vindicated when it became one of the biggest selling albums of the decade.

“There’s a lot going on,” explained Coogler.

“There was this member of the royal family of Britain who was playing these absolutely incendiary rock and roll shows in Minneapolis clubs. You’ve got Prince Phillip trying to get him to come home and marry Diana. Then Purple Rain breaks and he’s everywhere. Then what does he do next? Go home and prepare for life as a head of state or release the wildly experimental Around the World in a Day. He does the latter! It’s an incredible story.”

The new musical – God Save Our Funky Prince – will begin production soon.
