A new Lord of the Rings anime has been announced and will feature Pippin as a giant psy-powered mech from the future.
Merry is a heavy metal street punk from the slums of The Shire who tries to protect his friend from the army of orc androids trying to capture Pippin so he can serve Suaron who has been reincarnated as a hyper-intelligent computer AI.
“Lord of the Rings is a classic, we all love it, everyone does, but it’s a bit old fashioned, with it’s nice countryside and magic elves and living in cottages,” said Stewart James, producer of the new anime.
“It’s time to update it. Make it a story for the future. Make it more dynamic, exciting. In this new version, literally everything explodes every ten minutes, because that’s what the truth of living in this middle-earth of the future is like.”
Pippin and Merry are very different from the characters we are used to.
“Yeah, well, I mean Pippin is a giant psy-powered mech from the future. But he’s also much more modern – he swears, he listens to heavy metal music, he shoots giant death-lasers from his eyes. Merry, although he isn’t a mech, he does have cyber-augmented eyes, and makes a living trading ‘leaf’ – an outlawed psychotropic drug.
“When the pair of them steal from Farmer Maggot in this version, they destroy the farm with lasers and use Pippin’s psy-powers make Maggot wet himself.”
The new anime will run for 12 episodes, be soundtracked by one long guitar solo, and be largely incomprehensible after the first ten minutes.
