Muppets fans were celebrating at the news that a new film based on Thomas Hardy’s classic novel The Mayor of Casterbridge is currently in the works.
Returning to films such as Muppets Treasure Island and Muppets Christmas Carol, the new film will be an irreverent take on a great work of Victorian literature – in this case, the classic tale of a man who auctions off his wife.
“A Muppets adaptation of a Thomas Hardy novel just makes sense,” explained producer Stewart James.
“I mean, you’ve got mud, people auctioning off wives, abandoned mothers, more mud, people wanting to marry their cousins and even more mud. Everyone’s terribly austere and humanity is depicted as being largely dreadful.
“What better world into which to introduce the Swedish Chef and Animal the drummer.”
Kermit the Frog will take on the role of Henchard, the eponymous Mayor who auctioned off his wife, played by Miss Piggy, when drunk on rum.
A man called Newson, played by Fozzie Bear wins the auction and they live as man and wife for eighteen years before he is lost at see.
Miss Piggy then returns to Casterbridge and sets in motion a series of events that result in misery, death and mud. All played out to some wacky slapstick and hilarious songs.
“This is going to be great,” chuckled James.
“Who doesn’t love the Muppets and I think everyone is going to enjoy the unremitting misery of Thomas Hardy.”
With a soundtrack consisting of – Crazy, Kooky Casterbridge, ‘Orrible ‘Enchard and We’re All Going to Die One Day, So What’s the point – The Muppets Mayor of Casterbridge will be released next year.
If successful, producers are rumoured to be planning The Muppets A La Recherche du Temps Perdu as a follow up.
