More details have begun to emerge about the sequel to the much-loved 1964 classic Mary Poppins, with the most surprising being the music will be almost entirely the ‘drill’ style of music favoured disaffected youths in London.
‘Drill’ music and videos are currently best known as a scapegoat used by tabloids and politicians for a complex web of societal problems that have seen an increase in gang violence, however its use in a major motion picture could change all that.
“Yeah, we were going to go for a traditional ‘musical theatre’ style of music,” said producer and single-entendre Dick Andrews.
“But we’d got one song written – ‘Gawd blimey, luvaduck, knees up mother Brown up the old apples and pears and no mistake,’ and it became apparent that just wasn’t going to cut it in 2018, we needed a fresher sound.
“Drill music seemed the obvious choice.”
So, the song was re-written and became – ‘Gawd blimey, luvaduck, knees up mother Brown up the old apples and pears and no mistake, big up, big up, on your block’ – giving it a far more contemporary feel that feels much more in time with 2018.
“After we’d made that philosophical change, the songs pretty much wrote themselves,” said Mr Andrews.
“So, now we’ve got a soundtrack that includes ‘Mary got Brick,’ ‘Mikey on the Chopper,’ ‘Me ain’t no Ucker,’ and we think it’s just going to be huge.”
Mary Poppins 2: Skengman Comes will be released later this year.
