Marvel has announced that one of the stories in its animated anthology series What If… will depict a nightmarish dystopian version of our world in which there are no Marvel movies.
“The What if… stories, they allow us to go to some pretty dark places and I think the darkest thing we could think of is a world where there aren’t two or three Marvel movies each year,” explained Marvel Films chief Kevin Feige.
The story will depict a world in which people are forced to go to the movies each week to watch all sorts of different films, some of which don’t even have Spiderman in them
“It’s awful, there’s no action figures, no post-credits scenes, and Robert Downey Jnr has no career at all.”
“It’s kind of a cross between a bleak dystopian nightmare and an existential horror.”
The plot of the story will centre on a young boy who has never heard of the Hulk or Thor and tragically isn’t even aware of how empty his life it.
Other highlights of the What if… series include a story in which Iron Man is a carrot, a version of the world where all the Avengers are just normal and everyone else has superpowers and, perhaps most intriguingly of all, a story in which Black Widow isn’t by far and away the coolest Marvel character.
