Martin Scorsese is now regretting the fact that he didn’t film the Irishman in one continuous single shot but instead decided to using editing to tell the story.
“I said to Bobby, I said – ‘what do you say Bobby, shall we just make the whole film using one long single take?’” said Scorsese following last night’s Baftas.
“He said he thought that it would be a bit gimmicky.
“Why did I listen to him? What was I thinking! He was in Righteous Kill.”
A single take The Irishman would have followed the plot of the entire film from over the shoulder of Robert DeNiro’s Frank Sheeran and would have made the flashback sequences a particular challenge.
“Granted, making a 76-year-old man walk about Jersey for four hours would be tantamount to abuse, but think of the awards! It would have been worth the crippling arthritis pain, surely.
“I tell you, next film I make? Not only not having editing, but not having dialogue, action, or story, either – nothing. Just a single shot of a man sat at a table for two hours.
“Then, maybe I’ll get some awards.”
It is also understood that Boon Joon-ho briefly considered making Parasite in one single continuous take, but realised that, as it wasn’t in English, he had no shot at any major awards anyway so just focused on making an excellent film instead.
