With the success of the new adaptation of Les Miserables, the BBC has confirmed that Andrew Davies has been commissioned to create a second series set on a spaceship orbiting the distant planet of Riglor-8.
With the first series being a faithful adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic novel, the second series will be a brand new story and the writer has decided on a radically different setting.
“I think I have explored revolutionary France as much as I can,” explained Davies of his unusual decision.
“But I think that such is the richness of the characters created by Hugo it makes sense to transfer them to a giant spaceship in the far-reaches of the galaxy.”
It is understood that Jean Valjean will be the Captain of the spaceship USS Miserables, leading many to attack the credibility of the story after his apparent death in the original story.
“Oh, that is such a dull thing to say,” exclaimed Davies.
“Of course he died, but this is a spaceship – it’s the future, he, along with other characters who died in the novel, will have been resurrected using technology.”
Davies was reluctant to reveal details of the story but, teasingly, he gave a hint of what to expect.
“Well, I will be looking to tackle the similar themes of love, redemption and regret in the new series,” he confirmed.
“But with more laser battles and weird aliens. Which, I think, is what many fans of Les Miserables would really like to see.”
Les Miserables: Deep Space 2150 will be filmed next year and released in 2021.
I was sorry there was never a season 2, because the saga is unfinished. It is a terrible way to leave things, it’s so unfulfilling. I guess I’ll read the book again…
